Sanitation is more important than independence

In the future the flush toilet will become extinct. It makes no sense to flush excreta with precious drinking water. It's costly in terms of money and energy. In rural areas dry toilets have already become the best accepted technology. It's called Ecological Sanitation.

At current rates of progress the Millennium Development Goals sanitation target will not be met until the 22nd century. That's over 80 years too late!

Without toilets, disease and death are rife. Illness prevents people from working. It stops children going to school. It stops peace being built.

Without toilets, human waste can contaminate water, food and causes the majority of illness in the world. Illnesses like diarrhoea, which stop children growing healthily and lead to malnutrition.

One gram of faeces can contain 10 million viruses, one million bacteria, 1000 parasite cysts and 100 parasite eggs.

Every day 2.6 billion people do not have somewhere safe, private or hygienic to go to the toilet.

World Famous WC Company Signs Up

The legendary sanitary ware company Thomas Crapper has joined CORD’S global Toilet Twinning movement, linking three of its traditional high quality loos with three latrines deep in the African bush.

The famous Victorian’s name won him a place in history, but he is wrongly credited with inventing the WC. In reality the Yorkshire born plumber was Britain’s superior sanitary engineer of his day, holding four royal warrants and supplying plumbing and fittings for the Sandringham estate as well as fittings at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. He also pioneered the idea of bathroom showrooms.

Today the company continues to operate from Stratford upon Avon serving a world wide clientele. Managing Director Simon Kirby, who bought the company in l999 and began re-manufacturing the products created a century ago, said he was delighted to be a part of toilet twinning.

‘Thomas Crapper was a great sanitary pioneer who over a hundred years ago brought sanitation to the people of Britain. It is shocking that all this time later almost half of the people in the world still don’t have a crapper of their own,’ added Simon. ‘I am proud to be the first loo manufacturer to become a Toilet Twinner!’
